Recently, we achieved a significant milestone that we are excited to share with you: the very first successful transition from [Umbraco 8](https://www.webwonders.nl/en/umbraco-cms/umbraco-versions/umbraco-8/) to [Umbraco 13](https://www.webwonders.nl/en/umbraco-cms/umbraco-versions/umbraco-13/) on [Umbraco Cloud](https://www.webwonders.nl/en/umbraco-cms/umbraco-cloud/). Many websites are still waiting in line for migration in the market. We understand the anticipation and excitement that comes with this process, which is why we are thrilled to share our steps and findings with you in this blog post. ## Why make the transition to Umbraco 13? With [Umbraco 8](https://www.webwonders.nl/en/umbraco-cms/umbraco-versions/umbraco-8/) nearing its [end-of-life](https://www.webwonders.nl/umbraco-cms/umbraco-versies/), it was crucial to migrate to a newer version to ensure the sustainability, security, and efficiency of our clients' websites. Our proactive approach keeps our clients at the forefront of digital innovation. Just as [Hela](https://www.hela-nv.com) had the honor of going live on Umbraco 8.0.0 on Umbraco Cloud, they now have the privilege of being the first to successfully complete the migration from 8 to 13. ## The Migration Process: A Methodical Approach The migration from Umbraco 8 to 13 on Umbraco Cloud was a meticulously planned and executed process. We collaborated closely with Umbraco Cloud developers to resolve any final issues and ensure a seamless transition. Our approach involved the following steps: 1. **Exporting the site from Umbraco 8**: The initial step involved securely exporting the entire site from the existing Umbraco 8 environment. 2. **Importing the site into Umbraco 13**: Next, we imported the site into the new Umbraco 13 environment. 3. **Refactoring the code**: This process included updating and optimizing the code to be compatible with the new version of Umbraco. 4. **Testing**: An extensive testing phase ensured that all features seamlessly functioned in the new environment. 5. **Importing content**: Following that, we imported the most recent content to showcase the latest updates on the website. 6. **Going live**: Finally, the site was successfully launched on Umbraco 13 with minimal downtime. ## Findings and outcomes After completion, we meticulously analyzed all the results of the migration process, uncovering remarkable conclusions and successes: - **One-week turnaround time**: The entire migration was successfully completed within just a week. - **Minimal content freeze**: With only a one-hour interruption in content availability for the client, visitors remained unaffected. - **Seamless transfer of content and media**: All existing content and media seamlessly and automatically migrated to the new platform. - **Significant speed improvements**: Umbraco 13 showcased a notable enhancement in speed and performance compared to Umbraco 8. - **Clear path for future upgrades**: The migration process laid out a clear roadmap for upcoming updates and enhancements. ## Conclusion and recommendations This migration showcases the effectiveness and efficiency of our methods at Webwonders, as well as the power of Umbraco Cloud. With minimal disruption to our clients and a swift, seamless process, we are setting a new standard for future migrations. Our advice: ensure you are well-informed before embarking on a migration journey. With the knowledge and experience we have gained, we believe that a quick and efficient migration is possible if you follow our process and steps. If you fear you will lose too much time, you might be missing out on a crucial optimization step.
